ABOUT UCPS

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE PHYSICS SOCIETY (UCPS) s a forum of old students and teachers of the Department of Physics, H H Maharaja’s University College, Thiruvananthapuram. This society is registered under Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act of 1955. The formal inauguration of the University College Physics Society was held on Monday, 23 February 2009 at 2 pm at the C.V. Raman Hall, Department of Physics, University College by Sri Jacob Punnoose, IPS, DGP, Kerala, a former student of the Department.


ABOUT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

The institution, now called the University College, was founded in the year 1834 by the Government of Travancore during the reign of Swathi Thirunal celebrated for the Maharaja had occasion to visit a school that was imparting instruction in English at Nagarcoil under the auspices of the London Mission Society


ABOUT PHYSICS DEPT.

The Department of Physics, University College has a glorious history stretching back over a century. The magnificent building of the Department was built by the rulers of Travancore in 1906. It was formally inaugurated by Moolam Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore in January 1907. B.A course in Physics was also started during the same year. The University College was at that time affiliated to the University of Madras. When Travancore University came into existence in 1937, University College became its main study centre and research courses were introduced in the Department of Physics.
